After this exceptional summer break, we wish you all, readers and partners, a great start for a year that will undoubtedly be marked by rich events. And the return to normality remains the most desired of hopes and the most awaited prospect.

The main theme that we have chosen for this 44th issue deals with these unmanned aircraft on board whose piloting is provided remotely: Drones.

Originally designed for military missions uniquely, drones have now invaded huge areas of civilian space. After a remarkable technological advance and minaturization thanks to the telecom revolution, the civilian drones marketed today, have a weight that does not even exceed 25 kg and yet bursting with performance. Size reductions and weight reductions accompanied by a decline on prices have thus enabled a presence or rather a proliferation in many areas. Consequently, they make it possible to carry out a wide variety of civilian missions such as the monitoring of engineering works, antenna infrastructures or even agricultural operations. They play also an important role in the special deliveries of goods. Significant figures on a global scale prove this proliferation. For example, the civilian drones crisscrossing the American skies exceed and will soon double the number of planes online: 12,000 drones for 7,000 planes.

Another indicator of this "drone" trend is the nearly daily publication in the specialized press of articles revealing new models, recent experiments or the application of new software. The presence of drones in our skies has not escaped legal requirements and regulatory standards; thus the states have put in place administrative tools for the legal occupation of airspace and institutional instruments for the safe and risk-free circulation of these flying objects. To develop this subject, we first of all provide you with an interview with Mr. ASRY Marouane, international expert in the field of anti-drones, who will enlighten us on questions of security and the capacity of these machines to cause certain incidents. Indeed, because drones represent a real threat with serious consequences, the implementation of an anti-drone policy is becoming a necessity for all countries. These measures will allow to avoid in the future what happened recently at London's Heathrow airport for instance, which saw its air traffic disrupted for a few hours, because of the suspicious presence of a drone. Further to this interview, we added, in a few lines, the main concepts relating to drones as well as their current and essential regulatory requirements. And given the interpenetration of the two worlds, that of drones and that of telecom systems and ICT, we provide you with an article on the interaction between telecoms and drones. Finally, to wrap up this subject, we will give you a list of drone applications currently in progress in the world and we refer you, for more information, to the "events" section devoted exclusively to drones. And as usual, other relevant readings are offered to you in the other sections, in particular in “events” and “media library”. We remind you that to guarantee the independence of our editorial line, we are launching a call for contributions to offset part of the design and publication costs within the deadlines of LTE magazine.
