5G in nine points

1-    There are 2 ways to deploy 5G radio ; non-standalone mode (NSA) and standalone mode (SA). In NSA mode, 5G interacts with the 4G core. To deploy 5G in SA mode, a 5G core network is required. According to the GSMA, the global mobile industry association, 4G will continue to deploy in parallel with 5G NSA. There will even be interaction between the two 4G and 5G NSA networks. So it’s important to continue to deploy both infrastructures with the same original equipment manufacturer (see chart below).

-5G, a disruptive technology: The 3G and 4G generations of mobile telephony were part of a technological continuity. Each new generation was an evolution of the previous one. With 5G, a real technological breakthrough is born.

3-The 5G will offer increased speed and very low latency, close to that of optical fiber. Speeds equivalent to those of fiber, around at least 100 Mbit/s on average as perceived by the user, and up to 20 Gbit/s, at least in theory. 5G will have to be able to offer a real and a theoretical speed respectively 10 to 20 times faster compared to what provides 4G currently.

4- 5G will cause the end of “network neutrality”: 5G is based on the principle of slicing, which consists in “slicing” the network to allocate dedicated resources by type of use. There will be priorities to manage.

5- 5G will normally be operational with speeds of 500 km/h (e.g. High speed train line).

6- Latency: 4G+ latency approaches 10 milliseconds. In 5G, this could be reduced to less than a millisecond.

7- 5G is a network that will also be dedicated to the Internet of Things.

8- 5G will save energy since 5G should preserve the batteries of our devices.

9- 5G speed depends on the frequency band used: The more the band is important, the higher the speed. Concerning LTE, it uses a maximum band of 20 MHz, which allows a speed of 150 Mbps. By aggregating 5 carriers, the total band reaches 100 MHz, the speed can be 5 times higher. In 5G, we will need an 800 band.
