5G and its frequencies in Morocco?

5G is a breakthrough technology compared to previous generations of mobile phones. There are 2 ways to deploy 5G radio: non-standalone mode (NSA) and standalone mode (SA). In NSA mode, 5G interacts with the 4G core. To deploy 5G in SA mode, a 5G core network is required. As we know, the speed depends on the frequency band used: If in LTE we use a band of 20 MHz at most, which allows for a data speed of 150 Mbit / s, in 5G we will need a band around 800 Mbit / s.

3 use cases in 5G:

  • Internet of Things: services requiring wide coverage, low power consumption and relatively low speeds.

  • Ultra high speed: For example, to view videos in ultra-high definition (8K) or virtual or augmented reality applications.

  • Ultra-reliable communications with very low latency: These needs are mainly found in transport (reaction time in the event of risk of accident, for example), in medicine (tele-surgery) and for industry 4.0. This type of use will only be provided by 5G SA.

5G is the first mobile technology to operate at low, high and above all very high frequencies:

One of the drivers of change for 5G is that new technologies have made it possible to use millimeter spectrum for mobile broadband. But a full spectrum strategy for 5G requires releasing all kinds of waves, low, medium, and high. Because 5G is the first mobile technology to operate at frequencies that are both low, high, and above all very high.

High frequencies are frequencies in the band above 6 GHz (such as 26 Ghz) in order to address specific use cases requiring very high speeds. The last ANRT Board of Directors in Morocco adopted the frequency plan which foresees a reorganization for the 26 GHz band. A band which was recently adopted at WRC of 2019. But it will only be used in the future in 5G SA. What will be launched in 2023 is 5G NSA in the 700 MHz band and in the 3.4 GHz band.

Average frequencies: On the medium frequency spectrum and like the 3400-3800 MHz band would be used to deliver the best compromise between capacity and coverage. Morocco is expected to use the band around 3.4 GHz. The ANRT is in the redevelopment phase of this strip.

Low frequencies: Regarding the low spectrum, Morocco plans to use the 700 MHz band.

Sub 1GHz: Useful band for coverage in rural areas and in deep buildings.

1-6GHz: These are mobile and existing bands between 1Ghz and 2.6Ghz, and there could be others between 2.6Ghz and 4Ghz. They are unlikely to be able to support the highest 5G data rates without carrier aggregation.

> at 6 GHz: These are frequencies limited to small urban areas and inside buildings, because their radio propagation qualities favor small cell sizes.

5G is going to require a lot of infrastructure. Indeed, densified 5G networks will require significantly more fiber; hence, the importance of removing barriers to the deployment of wired fiber optic broadband.

At the dawn of the 20th century, Nicola Tesla saw a daring mobile future: “When wireless technology is fully applied, the Earth will be transformed into a huge brain capable of reacting in all of its parts”.
